The Feet.

Professor Logan Voltimore, cna training course

The human feet play a vital role in our ability to walk. In the human foot there are multiple bones which are known as the Talus, Calcaneus, cuboid, Navicular, Cuneiforms (1st, 2nd and 3rd), the metatarsals and the phalanges and these bones are found in the feet of all human beings. Each of these bones plays an important role in the anatomical construction of the human foot and without them a person’s ability to walk would be greatly compromised.

Talus

The talus bone is also known as the astragalus and is in the tarsus of the human foot and forms the lower section of the ankle joint. Using its articulations with the calcaneus, and navicular within the tarsus, the talus distributes the entire weight of the human body to the foot.

Calcaneus

The calcaneus bone is also known as the heel bone and is a bone of the human foot tarsus which makes up the heel. This is the largest of the tarsal bones in the human body and is also the largest bone in the foot.

Cuboid

The cuboid bone is one of seven tarsal bones in the human foot. The cuboid bone works with the 4th and 5th metatarsals which in turn form the 4th and 5th tarsometatarsal joints.

Navicular

The navicular bone is another of the tarsal bones in the human foot. The bone resembles a small boat. This bone is situated on the medial side of the foot and works mainly with the talus, distally, with the three cuneiform bones as well as occasionally with the cuboid laterally.

Cuneiforms

In the human foot there are three cuneiform bones. These are the medial cuneiform (1st) bone, the intermediate cuneiform (2nd) bone and the lateral cuneiform (3rd) bone. These bones are situated in between the navicular bone and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd metatarsal bones.

Metatarsals

The metatarsal bones are also referred to as the metatarsus and are defined as being a grouping of five lengthy bones in the human foot situated between the tarsal bones of the mid section of the foot and the hind as well as the phalanges of the toes. The metatarsal bones lack any individual names but are instead numbered from the side of the big toe as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th metatarsal.

Phalanges

Phalanges is the plural name for the phalanx bones in the human foot and are also in the human fingers. In the foot, these bones form the toes. The human big toe has two phalanges where as the other toes are made up of three. These bones are classified as long bone and do not have individual names but are instead named after the digit and the distance they are from the body. The distal phalanges are located at the tips of the toes, the proximal phalanges are located closest to the foot and work with the metatarsals of the foot and the middle or intermediate phalanges are located in between the distal and proximal. The big toe does not have any middle phalanges.
