Distance learning is a flexible way of studying for a qualification
without the need to travel to a specific institution. Students can
study from work, home, or anywhere that’s convenient for them. They
can also study whenever suits them, so there’s no need to stick to
specific lecture schedules or timetables. Unlike traditional
university environments, online distance learning courses are based
around a virtual learning environment, therefore all that’s required
is an Internet connection. A virtual environments offers the benefits
of firstly distance learning with the travel or relocating involved,
and secondly all the other potential drawbacks of being a full-time
students (i.e the inability to gain full time work whilst studying, or

connection). The key innovation of distance learning is the ability to
be part of an environment whereby students and tutors can communicate
with each other over the web – those on such courses can watch and
listen to seminars live, and regular assessment of students work is
done over the Internet. Students are always supported through distance
learning courses by an academic advisor, and interaction between both
parties is regular. As mentioned, studying is carried out around the
students personal commitments (not the other way around), therefore
these courses are ultimately aimed at working adults, however,
